If you are interested in playing league chess or simply wish to play social chess you will be very welcome! We meet on Wednesdays from 7 pm.

In order to join the club you need to be a member of the Coleshill Social Club, this will cost you approximately £30. The fee to be a league playing member of the chess club is £75 and under 18s are charged £20. In addition, league playing members are required to pay their own ECF fee, which is currently £20. Members not wishing to play league chess pay nothing on their first visit and £2 for each subsequent visit.


Coleshill Social Club fees last for twelve months from the day of joining. Chess Club full fees are payable by the last day of May or half by the last day of May and the residue by the last day of September. A pro rata rate will be charged for new members joining after the last day of June. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque or Bank Transfer. 


The overall membership will therefore cost in the region of £125. Over the course of the year this equates to £2.40 per week for some of the best playing conditions in the league and an extremely friendly club.

About us

Coleshill Chess Club was founded on Wednesday 4th May 2016. Des Green was appointed as the club secretary and applications were made to play in the Birmingham & District Chess League and the Cannock & District Chess League. The team finished a creditable 5th out of 13 in Division 6 of the Birmingham League and Paul Barrett won the first trophy for the fledgling club when he was victorious in the Division 6 Individual Tournament. The Cannock League team finished bottom in a division of 4 teams.

The following season, 2017/18, following an increase in membership the club fielded two teams in Division 6 of the Birmingham League comprising 12 teams. Promotion was achieved to Division 5 by the "A" team when they finished second to a strong University of Birmingham team. The "B" team finished in 8th position. The Cannock League team finished 4th in a division of 5 teams.

2018/19 season resulted in the Division 5 team finishing top of the Birmingham League of 12 and gaining promotion to Division 4. The Division 6 team finished 12th out of 14. The club also reached the final of the Dudley M Townshend Trophy losing to an extremely strong Redditch outfit. Individual success came with Tom Vanes winning the Birmingham League's Under 80 tournament, Paul Barrett appeared in his second final but was defeated in the Under 120 section. The Cannock League team lost only one match all season and finished 3rd out of 5 in a very tight campaign. Richard Bailey became the first winner of the Ray Dolan Trophy when he was successful in the tournament for players graded less than 100. Richard also reached the final of the Robert Ward Plate.

Two matches, two defeats

On Tuesday 8th October 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Steve Judd travelled to Moseley to play South Birmingham 'A'. The home team proved to be just too strong and were victorious by 3.5 to 2.5. The following night, Wednesday 9th October 2024, the Division 4 team played their first league match of the season. The team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne were defeated by 2 - 3.

A busy week of chess for the Coleshill players. Wednesday 2nd October 2024 witnessed two matches at the home venue. A depleted Division 3 team scored an impressive 3.5 to 2.5 victory against a strong Redditch outfit. The team was Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy. On adjacent tables, Zion Hartop, Nigel Terry and Andy Glover continued a fine start to the season with their third victory in the Minor Division with a 2 - 1 win against Kynoch. The following evening, Thursday 3rd October, the Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green endured a cold evening at Longbridge and went down by 0.5 to 3.5.

Mixed Trophy results

Wednesday 25th September 2024 witnessed eleven boards in operation in the first rounds of the BDCL Trophy competitions. The Division three team were forced to play two reserves in their Terrill Trophy match against a very strong South Birmingham team from Division 2. Coleshill received a handicap allowance of 1.5 points. This proved to of no real advantage as the team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Des Green and Geoff Stokes were defeated by 4.5 to 3. Also in operation was the Division four team who entertained Kynoch 5B in the Townshend Trophy. Kynoch received a 0.5 handicap. The Coleshill team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Rob Payne and Steve Judd progressed to the next round round with a 3 - 2.5 victory.

On Wednesday 18th September 2024, the Minor Division team of Steve Judd, Geoff Stokes and Andy Glover welcomed Lichfield in the BDCL Minor Division. The team recorded a 2-1 win to continue their winning start to the season.

On Wednesday 11th September 2024, the Coleshill Division 5 team welcomed local rivals Sutton Coldfield "A" for their first league match of the season. The team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Nigel Terry were heavily out graded on all boards and were defeated 3 - 1.

First results for the new season

Two of our teams were in action on Thursday 5th September in the Birmingham and District Chess League. The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Richard Bailey and Gary Haycock travelled to face Lichfield. Their opponents proved to be too strong and won by 5-1. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Rob Payne, Geoff Stokes and Des Green were successful on their travels to Longbridge and returned with a 2-1 victory.

AGM

The AGM was delayed for a week and was held on Wednesday 15th May 2024. All of the officers were elected en bloc and a Safeguarding Officer was appointed. The club will be playing in the Birmingham League with teams in Division 3, Division 4 (provisionally), Division 5 and the Minor Division. There will also be a team playing in Division 3 of the Coventry League for the first time. This will ensure that members have access to more games during the season.

Coleshill Club Champion

Wednesday 1st May 2024 witnessed the last remaining games of the season in the Coleshill Club Championship. After six rounds of a Swiss Tournament, Ray Bettam was crowned the first Coleshill Club Champion. Eleven members contested the tournament organised by Peter Thompson.The AGM will be held on Wednesday 8th May 2024 commencing at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome! Board violation hands Coleshill 5B a win

The last game of the season for the 5B team was held on Wednesday 27th April 2024. The result on the night was a win for the visitors, South Birmingham 3-1. This however was changed to a 4 - 0 victory for the home team as South Birmingham were guilty of a board violation. Their board 2 player was graded more than 100 points above their board 1 player. They had also defaulted their board 4 who failed to arrive. The Coleshill team was Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Ostap Snihura.

On Tuesday 20th February 2024 the Division 3 team travelled into the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter to play second placed Mutual Circle. They fought bravely and were not disgraced when losing 4.5 to 1.5.

A point and win by default

On Wednesday 24th January 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Gary Haycock played out a creditable 3 - 3 draw at the Coleshill Social against a strong Shirley and Wythall team. The following evening, Thursday 25th January, the Division 5B team of Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Des Green travelled to Walsall Kipping. Unfortunately Rob Payne was detained in heavy traffic and never made the venue giving the home team a board victory. The final result was Walsall Kipping 2.5 Coleshill "B" 1.5. However, for the second game in succession the home team were guilty of a board violation resulting in Coleshill being awarded the match 4 - 0.

Mixed fortunes in the Trophies

On Wednesday 17th January 2024 two Coleshill teams were involved in Quarter Final ties in Trophy competitions. The Division 3 team were drawn away to Redditch from Division 1. This was a daunting task and despite been given a 3.5 point handicap advantage it was always going to be a tough struggle. A major problem on the M42 resulted in Paul Barrett abandoning his journey after being motionless in his vehicle for over two hours. Malcolm Phipps suffered a similar experience and arrived at the playing venue with only six minutes remaining on his clock. The four members who managed to arrive in time put up a good fight but the final score was Redditch 5.5 Coleshill 4. The selected team was Peter Thompson, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Rob Payne.The Division 5 team of Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock, Phillip Parnell and Malcolm Jones faced another tricky tie when they entertained Stourbridge from Division 4. The half point advantage given to Coleshill proved decisive as on the night the teams were locked at 2.5 each. The half point handicap advantage resulted in Coleshill moving into the semi finals with a 3 - 2.5 win.

On Wednesday 10th January 2024 the Division 5B team of Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Des Green drew against visiting local rivals Sutton Coldfield 2 - 2. Coleshill appealed against the board order of Sutton and the league upheld the appeal giving Coleshill a 4 - 0 victory.

On Tuesday 9th January 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Ray Bettam and Richard Bailey travelled to play Olton Chess Club. They returned home with a 3.5 to 2.5 victory to record their third league victory on the trot. The result places them only two points behind the current leaders with two games in hand.

The Coleshill team were victorious by 3.5 to 2.5 to post their first win of the season.

The Division 5B team welcomed Warley Quinborne to Coleshill Social Club on Wednesday 1st November 2023. The visitors named their team and the match started without their board 1 player. He failed to arrive ensuring that Coleshill were one game up as the clocks were started. Phillip Parnell made it two nil with a win on board 4, Rob Payne secured the win for the team with a draw on board 2, Des Green drew on board 4 ensuring that Coleshill were the victors by 3 - 1. This gave the team their first points of the season at the fifth attempt.

Unavailability and illness resulted in three reserves stepping in to play against a strong South Birmingham outfit. Wednesday 25th October and the Division 5A team of Richard Bailey, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy and Gary Haycock suffered a 4 - 0 reversal at the hands of a very strong Mutual Circle team at the Coleshill Social Club. Paul Barrett also tasted defeat in his first round game in the Birmingham & District Individual Tournament.

Wednesday 11th October 2023 witnessed two of Coleshill's teams in action. The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Paul Barrett entertained Stourbridge. The resulting 3 - 3 draw gained Coleshill their first point of the season. In contrast the Division 5B are still looking for their first point and suffered their fourth defeat after travelling to play a strong Mutual Circle team. The team of Malcolm Jones, Des Green, Phillip Parnell and Andy Glover lost 3 - 1. The team was out graded by an average of 420 per board.

On Monday 2nd October 2023 the Coleshill 5"B" team travelled to play Kynoch in a Division 5 encounter in the Birmingham League. The team of Malcolm Jones, Des Green, Colin Bissell and Phillip Parnell were out graded on all boards by at least 200 points. They performed well to gain three draws with just one defeat and left with a 1.5 to 2.5 defeat.

Disappointment in both Trophy matches

There was double disappointment for Coleshill Chess Club when both teams were eliminated in the first round of trophy tournaments. In the Terrill Trophy, the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps and Ray Bettam travelled to play Kynoch of Division 3 and suffered a 4 - 2 defeat. The Division 5 team of Richard Bailey, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne entertained Redditch from Division 5 and were on the wrong end of a 2 - 3 defeat.

The first Division 5 match in the Birmingham League saw the 5B team entertain the 5A outfit. Four closely fought encounters resulted in the 5A team winning by 3 - 1. The 5A team was Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Ostap Snihura. The 5B team was Malcolm Jones, Des Green, Colin Bissell and Phillip Parnell. Well done to all concerned!

Opening match defeat

The Birmingham League season started for the Coleshill Division 3 team on Wednesday 6th September with a defeat against local rivals Sutton Coldfield. this was always expected to be a tough start as the visitors had suffered relegation from Division 2 last season and are determined to regain their status as soon as possible. The final score of 2.5 - 3.5 was justified due to the higher grading of the opposition. The Coleshill team was Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Paul Barrett. The team's next fixture is in the Terrill Trophy when they travelled to Kynoch for Division 3 on Monday 25th September 2023.

The following appointments and decisions were made at the AGM. The following officers were elected, Chairman - Graham Barrett, Secretary & Treasurer - Des Green, Assistant Treasurer - Malcolm Jones, Publicity Officer - Richard Bailey, Internal Tournament Director - Tom Vanes. It was decided to enter three teams into the Birmingham & District Chess Chess League, one team in Division 3 and two teams into Division 5. Peter Thompson would be organising an internal club tournament and would be organising demonstrations based on a variety of topics during the close season. Junior members attending the club would be encouraged to play an adult during the first hour.

Individual disappointments

Tuesday 25th April 2023 was double disappointment for Eamon Murphy and Des Green. Both players had reached the final of their respective grading competitions. Both players were heavily out graded by opponents who had been given extremely low estimated grades at the start of the season.

Double celebrations!

Wednesday 19th April 2023 was cause for double celebrations by Coleshill Chess Club. The Division 3 team obtained two points to leave them well clear of relegation when they entertained Oscott Chess Club at the Coleshill Social Club. The team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett and Richard Bailey were victorious by 4-2 and retain their spot in Division 3 for next season.

At the same time the Minor Division team travelled to play Solihull "D" looking for a point to be crowned league champions. The team of Thomas Cassisi, Rob Payne and Des Green obtained the necessary 1.5 - 1.5 draw to finish top of the table.

There are only two individual finals left to be played by Coleshill players. Eamon Murphy and Des Green travel to Olton Chess Club on Tuesday 25th April to contest the Maximum 1450 and Maximum 1300 Tournaments respectively.

Double delight!

Wednesday 12th April 2023 witnessed two victories on home territory.

The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett and Malcolm Phipps eased their relegation worries with a closely fought victory by 3.5 to 2.5 over Mutual Circle. The team now require one point in their last match next week against already relegated Oscott.

The Minor Division team of Malcolm Jones, Rob Payne and Thomas Cassisi eased past Solihull "D" by 2-1. The team now need a single point from their return match next week to be crowned champions of the Division.

On Tuesday 11th April 2023 Tom Vanes travelled to Olton Chess Club to play against Chris Cox of Mercia Chess Club in the Final of the Birmingham Chess League tournament for players graded no more than 1600. He triumphed when his opponent resigned after 53 moves.

On Wednesday 5th April 2023, the Coleshill Minor Division team travelled once more to Solihull to play their "C" team. The team of Thomas Cassisi, Rob Payne and Des Green returned home victorious after a 2-1 victory. The team moved into second place in the league and require three points from their remaining two matches, both against Solihull "D", to win the league title.

On Wednesday 29th March 2023 the Minor Division team entertained Solihull "A". The visitors could only call on two players due to a late withdrawal meaning that Colin Bissell won his game by default. Malcolm Jones obtained a draw and Rob Payne's victory ensured that the team won 2.5 to 0.5. The result leaves the team still in with a chance of winning the league title, three games remain against Solihull "C" away and two fixtures against Solihull "D".

A close call at Warley Quinborne

The Division 5 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Des Green travelled to play Warley Quinborne on Thursday 23rd March 2023. All six games were closely contested with five ending in draws, the solitary win for the home team resulted in a 3.5 to 2.5 result for the hosts. The result leaves Coleshill still needing points to avoid being relegated or ending up with a relegation play off. The team have two remaining matches both at home, Mutual Circle and fellow relegation candidates Oscott. It will be a close call!

On Wednesday 22nd March, Des Green defeated Malcolm Jones in the replay of the Birmingham Chess League's semi final for players graded a maximum of 1300. Des joins Tom Vanes who has qualified for the final of the maximum 1600 section and Eamon Murphy who is the final of the maximum 1450 section. The finals are to be played at Olton Chess Club on a date yet to be determined.

The Division 3 team were beaten by a Sutton Coldfield outfit from Division 2 in the final of the Homer Trophy. The winners paid Coleshill the compliment of playing their strongest team. Heavily out graded on the majority of the boards, the team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes and Richard Bailey aided by a 1.5 point handicap advantage went down by a score of 5 to 2.5. The team are to be congratulated on reaching the final stage of this competition.

The league have deducted the win from Solihull on board 1 and also deducted them a penalty point. The original score of 2 - 1 in Solihull's favour has now been amended to a 1 - 0 victory to Coleshill.

Monday 16th January 2023 was a night of mixed results for Coleshill Chess Club. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Malcolm Jones, Thomas Cassisi and Colin Bissell travelled to Ward End Social and suffered their first defeat of the season with an emphatic 3 - 0 defeat.

The division 3 team gained a valuable league point against fellow strugglers Solihull. Coleshill registered their first win in a trophy competition when they defeated Stourbridge in a closely fought battle on Tuesday 14th December 2021.. The 2019/2020 final had been held over due to the Covid epidemic. Olton Chess Club hosted the final and it finished level at 3-3. The board count rule was applied, winning board numbers are added together and the team with the lower total win. Coleshill won on boards 2 and 3 giving a total of 5 whilst Stourbridge won on boards 5 and 6 to give them a total of 11. Congratulations go to Peter Thompson, Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes who were victorious on the night.

There were two matches involving Coleshill on Wednesday 8th December 2021. The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Richard Bailey travelled to play Oscott "B'. They returned with an emphatic 5 - 1 victory to continue their unbeaten start to the season. The Cannock League team played their final match of the shortened season when they entertained Rugeley. A much changed team from the originally selected players, three cry offs on the morning of the match,  performed well but went down by 2.5 to 1.5. Gary Haycock, Malcolm Jones, Oliver Kettlewell and Des Green were out graded on all boards but matched their opponents in four tightly fought battles.

The match was played in a good spirit and the visitors returned empty handed after a 3.5 to 0.5 defeat. No one was disgraced despite being heavily out graded on all boards put in a good performance.

Chess Club is open

Coleshill Chess Club is now open and operating under strict regulations.  We are currently open on a Thursday evening from 7pm to 10pm. This will change to our normal Wednesday evenings from Wednesday 14th October 2020.

If you wish to visit you will need to follow the procedures:

1. Enter the Coleshill Social Club at the rear entrance.

2. You must wear a face covering.

3.. You do not need to sign in as we have our register upstairs in the playing area.

4. If you require a drink from the bar you must sit down and a member of the bar staff will organise payment and bring the drink to your table.

5. Make your way through the large dance floor and through the door leading to the stairs.

6. There is a sanitiser at the bottom of the stairs, please use it.

7. Outside the playing area there is a register for you to complete.

8. Once seated you may remove your face covering if you want to.

9. It is suggested that you play the same opponent for the duration of your stay.

10. Sanitise your hands as many times as you wish during your stay.

11. Drinks glasses and bottle should be placed on the bar in the playing area when you are finished with them.

12. It goes without saying that you should not enter the club if you have any signs of Covid-19.

Monthly summer tournaments

At the recent AGM it was proposed that the club have a monthly tournament on the first Wednesday of the months of June, July and August. Tom Vanes organised the first event on Wednesday 5th June 2019. Thirteen members participated in a five round Swiss tournament with each player having to make all moves within five minutes. John Smith was victorious on the night with a maximum five wins. On Wednesday 3rd July 2019, ten members played in a three round Swiss tournament with each player having a maximum of ten minutes to make all moves. Paul Barrett and John Smith tied for first place with a score of two and a half points from their three games. This was again organised by Tom Vanes. The August tournament was held on Wednesday 5th August 2018 and seven members contested a three round Swiss system Chess 960 competition with a fifteen minute per player time limit. The winner on the night was Paul Barrett with a maximum of three wins from his three games. All three tournaments were played in a relaxed but serious atmosphere and thanks to Tom Vanes for his organising of the three evenings.

On Tuesday 8th October 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Steve Judd travelled to Moseley to play South Birmingham 'A'. The home team proved to be just too strong and were victorious by 3.5 to 2.5. The following night, Wednesday 9th October 2024, the Division 4 team played their first league match of the season. The team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne were defeated by 2 - 3.

Two out of three ain't bad!
A busy week of chess for the Coleshill players. Wednesday 2nd October 2024 witnessed two matches at the home venue. A depleted Division 3 team scored an impressive 3.5 to 2.5 victory against a strong Redditch outfit. The team was Peter Thompson, Paul Roper, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Ray Bettam and Eamon Murphy. On adjacent tables, Zion Hartop, Nigel Terry and Andy Glover continued a fine start to the season with their third victory in the Minor Division with a 2 - 1 win against Kynoch. The following evening, Thursday 3rd October, the Division 5 team of Steve Judd, Malcolm Jones, Geoff Stokes and Des Green endured a cold evening at Longbridge and went down by 0.5 to 3.5.

Wednesday 25th September 2024 witnessed eleven boards in operation in the first rounds of the BDCL Trophy competitions. The Division three team were forced to play two reserves in their Terrill Trophy match against a very strong South Birmingham team from Division 2. Coleshill received a handicap allowance of 1.5 points. This proved to of no real advantage as the team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Des Green and Geoff Stokes were defeated by 4.5 to 3. Also in operation was the Division four team who entertained Kynoch 5B in the Townshend Trophy. Kynoch received a 0.5 handicap. The Coleshill team of Ray Bettam, Richard Bailey, Eamon Murphy, Rob Payne and Steve Judd progressed to the next round round with a 3 - 2.5 victory.

First results for the new season
Two of our teams were in action on Thursday 5th September in the Birmingham and District Chess League. The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Richard Bailey and Gary Haycock travelled to face Lichfield. Their opponents proved to be too strong and won by 5-1. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Rob Payne, Geoff Stokes and Des Green were successful on their travels to Longbridge and returned with a 2-1 victory.

AGM
The AGM was delayed for a week and was held on Wednesday 15th May 2024. All of the officers were elected en bloc and a Safeguarding Officer was appointed. The club will be playing in the Birmingham League with teams in Division 3, Division 4 (provisionally), Division 5 and the Minor Division. There will also be a team playing in Division 3 of the Coventry League for the first time. This will ensure that members have access to more games during the season.

Coleshill Club Champion
Wednesday 1st May 2024 witnessed the last remaining games of the season in the Coleshill Club Championship. After six rounds of a Swiss Tournament, Ray Bettam was crowned the first Coleshill Club Champion. Eleven members contested the tournament organised by Peter Thompson.The AGM will be held on Wednesday 8th May 2024 commencing at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome! Board violation hands Coleshill 5B a win
The last game of the season for the 5B team was held on Wednesday 27th April 2024. The result on the night was a win for the visitors, South Birmingham 3-1. This however was changed to a 4 - 0 victory for the home team as South Birmingham were guilty of a board violation. Their board 2 player was graded more than 100 points above their board 1 player. They had also defaulted their board 4 who failed to arrive. The Coleshill team was Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Ostap Snihura.

A point and win by default
On Wednesday 24th January 2024 the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Gary Haycock played out a creditable 3 - 3 draw at the Coleshill Social against a strong Shirley and Wythall team. The following evening, Thursday 25th January, the Division 5B team of Phillip Parnell, Rob Payne, Malcolm Jones and Des Green travelled to Walsall Kipping. Unfortunately Rob Payne was detained in heavy traffic and never made the venue giving the home team a board victory. The final result was Walsall Kipping 2.5 Coleshill "B" 1.5. However, for the second game in succession the home team were guilty of a board violation resulting in Coleshill being awarded the match 4 - 0.

Mixed fortunes in the Trophies
On Wednesday 17th January 2024 two Coleshill teams were involved in Quarter Final ties in Trophy competitions. The Division 3 team were drawn away to Redditch from Division 1. This was a daunting task and despite been given a 3.5 point handicap advantage it was always going to be a tough struggle. A major problem on the M42 resulted in Paul Barrett abandoning his journey after being motionless in his vehicle for over two hours. Malcolm Phipps suffered a similar experience and arrived at the playing venue with only six minutes remaining on his clock. The four members who managed to arrive in time put up a good fight but the final score was Redditch 5.5 Coleshill 4. The selected team was Peter Thompson, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett and Rob Payne.The Division 5 team of Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock, Phillip Parnell and Malcolm Jones faced another tricky tie when they entertained Stourbridge from Division 4. The half point advantage given to Coleshill proved decisive as on the night the teams were locked at 2.5 each. The half point handicap advantage resulted in Coleshill moving into the semi finals with a 3 - 2.5 win.

The Division 5B team welcomed Warley Quinborne to Coleshill Social Club on Wednesday 1st November 2023. The visitors named their team and the match started without their board 1 player. He failed to arrive ensuring that Coleshill were one game up as the clocks were started. Phillip Parnell made it two nil with a win on board 4, Rob Payne secured the win for the team with a draw on board 2, Des Green drew on board 4 ensuring that Coleshill were the victors by 3 - 1. This gave the team their first points of the season at the fifth attempt.

In contrast the Division 5B are still looking for their first point and suffered their fourth defeat after travelling to play a strong Mutual Circle team. The team of Malcolm Jones, Des Green, Phillip Parnell and Andy Glover lost 3 - 1. The team was out graded by an average of 420 per board.

On Monday 2nd October 2023 the Coleshill 5"B" team travelled to play Kynoch in a Division 5 encounter in the Birmingham League. The team of Malcolm Jones, Des Green, Colin Bissell and Phillip Parnell were out graded on all boards by at least 200 points. They performed well to gain three draws with just one defeat and left with a 1.5 to 2.5 defeat.

Disappointment in both Trophy matches
There was double disappointment for Coleshill Chess Club when both teams were eliminated in the first round of trophy tournaments. In the Terrill Trophy, the Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps and Ray Bettam travelled to play Kynoch of Division 3 and suffered a 4 - 2 defeat. The Division 5 team of Richard Bailey, Ray Bettam, Eamon Murphy, Gary Haycock and Rob Payne entertained Redditch from Division 5 and were on the wrong end of a 2 - 3 defeat.

Opening match defeat
The Birmingham League season started for the Coleshill Division 3 team on Wednesday 6th September with a defeat against local rivals Sutton Coldfield. this was always expected to be a tough start as the visitors had suffered relegation from Division 2 last season and are determined to regain their status as soon as possible. The final score of 2.5 - 3.5 was justified due to the higher grading of the opposition. The Coleshill team was Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Paul Barrett. The team's next fixture is in the Terrill Trophy when they travelled to Kynoch for Division 3 on Monday 25th September 2023.

AGM news

The following appointments and decisions were made at the AGM. The following officers were elected, Chairman - Graham Barrett, Secretary & Treasurer - Des Green, Assistant Treasurer - Malcolm Jones, Publicity Officer - Richard Bailey, Internal Tournament Director - Tom Vanes. It was decided to enter three teams into the Birmingham & District Chess Chess League, one team in Division 3 and two teams into Division 5. Peter Thompson would be organising an internal club tournament and would be organising demonstrations based on a variety of topics during the close season. Junior members attending the club would be encouraged to play an adult during the first hour.

Individual disappointments

Tuesday 25th April 2023 was double disappointment for Eamon Murphy and Des Green. Both players had reached the final of their respective grading competitions. Both players were heavily out graded by opponents who had been given extremely low estimated grades at the start of the season.

Double celebrations!

Wednesday 19th April 2023 was cause for double celebrations by Coleshill Chess Club. The Division 3 team obtained two points to leave them well clear of relegation when they entertained Oscott Chess Club at the Coleshill Social Club. The team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett and Richard Bailey were victorious by 4-2 and retain their spot in Division 3 for next season.

At the same time the Minor Division team travelled to play Solihull "D" looking for a point to be crowned league champions. The team of Thomas Cassisi, Rob Payne and Des Green obtained the necessary 1.5 - 1.5 draw to finish top of the table.

There are only two individual finals left to be played by Coleshill players. Eamon Murphy and Des Green travel to Olton Chess Club on Tuesday 25th April to contest the Maximum 1450 and Maximum 1300 Tournaments respectively.

Double delight!

Wednesday 12th April 2023 witnessed two victories on home territory.

The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, John Smith, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Paul Barrett and Malcolm Phipps eased their relegation worries with a closely fought victory by 3.5 to 2.5 over Mutual Circle. The team now require one point in their last match next week against already relegated Oscott.

The Minor Division team of Malcolm Jones, Rob Payne and Thomas Cassisi eased past Solihull "D" by 2-1. The team now need a single point from their return match next week to be crowned champions of the Division.

On Tuesday 11th April 2023 Tom Vanes travelled to Olton Chess Club to play against Chris Cox of Mercia Chess Club in the Final of the Birmingham Chess League tournament for players graded no more than 1600. He triumphed when his opponent resigned after 53 moves.

On Wednesday 5th April 2023, the Coleshill Minor Division team travelled once more to Solihull to play their "C" team. The team of Thomas Cassisi, Rob Payne and Des Green returned home victorious after a 2-1 victory. The team moved into second place in the league and require three points from their remaining two matches, both against Solihull "D", to win the league title.

On Wednesday 29th March 2023 the Minor Division team entertained Solihull "A". The visitors could only call on two players due to a late withdrawal meaning that Colin Bissell won his game by default. Malcolm Jones obtained a draw and Rob Payne's victory ensured that the team won 2.5 to 0.5. The result leaves the team still in with a chance of winning the league title, three games remain against Solihull "C" away and two fixtures against Solihull "D".

A close call at Warley Quinborne

The Division 5 team of Peter Thompson, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Des Green travelled to play Warley Quinborne on Thursday 23rd March 2023. All six games were closely contested with five ending in draws, the solitary win for the home team resulted in a 3.5 to 2.5 result for the hosts. The result leaves Coleshill still needing points to avoid being relegated or ending up with a relegation play off. The team have two remaining matches both at home, Mutual Circle and fellow relegation candidates Oscott. It will be a close call!

Third individual finalist for Coleshill

On Wednesday 22nd March, Des Green defeated Malcolm Jones in the replay of the Birmingham Chess League's semi final for players graded a maximum of 1300. Des joins Tom Vanes who has qualified for the final of the maximum 1600 section and Eamon Murphy who is the final of the maximum 1450 section. The finals are to be played at Olton Chess Club on a date yet to be determined.

The Birmingham League have ruled that Solihull played an ineligible player on board 1 in the Minor League match on Wednesday 1st February. The league have deducted the win from Solihull on board 1 and also deducted them a penalty point. The original score of 2 - 1 in Solihull's favour has now been amended to a 1 - 0 victory to Coleshill.

Semi Final Triumph

Monday 16th January 2023 was a night of mixed results for Coleshill Chess Club. The Division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Richard Bailey defeated fellow Division 3 team Oscott in the semi final of the Homer Trophy. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Malcolm Jones, Thomas Cassisi and Colin Bissell travelled to Ward End Social and suffered their first defeat of the season with an emphatic 3 - 0 defeat.

Valuable point gained

The division 3 team gained a valuable league point against fellow strugglers Solihull. The team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Phipps and Richard Bailey was heavily out graded on three of the boards but secured a creditable draw to help in their fight to avoid relegation.

On the same evening Malcolm Jones and Des Green played out a draw in their semi final of the BDCL individual tournament for players grade less than 1301. A date for the replay has yet to be determined.

Division 5 team still undefeated

The Division 5 team remain undefeated after visitors Ward End Social secured their first league point of the season with a 2-2 draw at Coleshill Social Club on Wednesday 14th December 2022. The team was Ray Bettam, Gary Haycock, Eamon Murphy and Thomas Cassisi. On the same evening Tom Vanes defeated Chris East from Sutton Coldfield in the first round of the Birmingham League individual tournament for players graded less than 1651. Tom now enters the semi final draw which has yet to take place.

A good night at Coleshill!

Wednesday 30th November 2022 was good night for the two competing Coleshill teams. In the Third Division, the team of Peter Thompson, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Tom Vanes, Richard Bailey and Eamon Murphy, deputising for captain Graham Barrett,  entertained high flying Olton "A". The team was successful and recorded a win by 3.5 to 2.5. Meanwhile the Minor Division team of Malcolm Jones, Des Green and Colin Bissell defeated the current leaders Solihull "B" by 2-1 to maintain their 100% start to the season.

Excellent win at Olton

The division 3 team of Peter Thompson, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Phipps, Paul Barrett, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes travelled to Olton Chess Club for the second week in succession on Tuesday 15th November. They faced a difficult task in the first round of the Homer Trophy when facing the Olton division 1 outfit. They returned with a win and two draws and aided by a handicap allowance of 3.5 were victorious by 5.5 to 4. They now await their semi final opponents for the match week beginning 16th January 2023.

It is hoped that this fixture will be held on an annual basis with the teams alternating who acts as hosts.

The club will be entering three teams into the Birmingham League for the coming season. Division 3 (6 boards), Division 5 (4 boards) and the Minor Division (3 boards).

Three friendly matches have been arranged. The first one was an away fixture against Ward End Social on Monday 20th June 2022. The match was won by Coleshill  by 4.5 to 1.5.

They further advised early evening on the match date that one of their players was unavailable due to injury and that the remaining four players would be travelling to honour the fixture. Trophy winners!

Coleshill registered their first win in a trophy competition when they defeated Stourbridge in a closely fought battle on Tuesday 14th December 2021.. The 2019/2020 final had been held over due to the Covid epidemic. Olton Chess Club hosted the final and it finished level at 3-3. The board count rule was applied, winning board numbers are added together and the team with the lower total win. Coleshill won on boards 2 and 3 giving a total of 5 whilst Stourbridge won on boards 5 and 6 to give them a total of 11. Chess Club is open

Coleshill Chess Club is now open and operating under strict regulations.  We are currently open on a Thursday evening from 7pm to 10pm. This will change to our normal Wednesday evenings from Wednesday 14th October 2020.

If you wish to visit you will need to follow the procedures:

1. Enter the Coleshill Social Club at the rear entrance.

2. You must wear a face covering.

3.. You do not need to sign in as we have our register upstairs in the playing area.

4. If you require a drink from the bar you must sit down and a member of the bar staff will organise payment and bring the drink to your table.

5. Make your way through the large dance floor and through the door leading to the stairs.

6. There is a sanitiser at the bottom of the stairs, please use it.

7. Outside the playing area there is a register for you to complete.

8. Once seated you may remove your face covering if you want to.

9. It is suggested that you play the same opponent for the duration of your stay.

10. Sanitise your hands as many times as you wish during your stay.

11. Drinks glasses and bottle should be placed on the bar in the playing area when you are finished with them.

12. It goes without saying that you should not enter the club if you have any signs of Covid-19.

Monthly summer tournaments

At the recent AGM it was proposed that the club have a monthly tournament on the first Wednesday of the months of June, July and August. Tom Vanes organised the first event on Wednesday 5th June 2019. Thirteen members participated in a five round Swiss tournament with each player having to make all moves within five minutes. John Smith was victorious on the night with a maximum five wins. On Wednesday 3rd July 2019, ten members played in a three round Swiss tournament with each player having a maximum of ten minutes to make all moves. Paul Barrett and John Smith tied for first place with a score of two and a half points from their three games. This was again organised by Tom Vanes. The August tournament was held on Wednesday 5th August 2018 and seven members contested a three round Swiss system Chess 960 competition with a fifteen minute per player time limit. The winner on the night was Paul Barrett with a maximum of three wins from his three games. All three tournaments were played in a relaxed but serious atmosphere and thanks to Tom Vanes for his organising of the three evenings.
